If your child is at a Cambridge-affiliated school in Pakistan, you will hear the terms "O Levels" and "A Levels" constantly. What are they, how do they differ, and what do they mean for your child's future? Here is what you need to know.

What Are O Levels?

O Levels (Ordinary Level) is the secondary school qualification offered by Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE). In Pakistan, students typically sit O Level exams at the end of Class 10 (around age 16). Students choose between 7 and 10 subjects, sitting an exam in each subject set and marked by Cambridge in the UK.

Grades: A*, A, B, C, D, E, U (Ungraded). Most universities require a minimum of five credits (C grade or above) including English and Mathematics.

What Are A Levels?

A Levels (Advanced Level) follow O Levels and represent Class 11–12 (roughly ages 17–19). Students typically choose 3 to 4 subjects in much greater depth. A Levels are the direct entry qualification for undergraduate university admission, both in Pakistan and internationally.

Grades: A*, A, B, C, D, E, U. Top Pakistani universities use A Level grades directly for admission. UK universities use UCAS points calculated from A Level grades.

How Is O Level Different From Matric?

  • O Level is set and marked by Cambridge (UK); Matric is set by Pakistani boards
  • O Level uses criteria-referenced grading (your performance against a standard); Matric uses rank-based marking
  • O Level is offered in English only; Matric can be Urdu-medium
  • O Level fees are substantially higher due to registration and examination costs

Choosing O Level Subjects

The most common O Level subject combination in Pakistan includes:

  • Core (required by most schools): English Language, Mathematics, Pakistan Studies, Islamiyat (for Muslim students)
  • Sciences: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Combined Science
  • Social Sciences: History, Geography, Economics, Business Studies
  • Languages: Urdu, French, Arabic

For students aiming for medicine or engineering at A Level, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (or Mathematics) are strongly recommended at O Level.

Choosing A Level Subjects

A Level subject choice is critical. It directly determines which undergraduate degrees are accessible. Common combinations:

  • Pre-Medical: Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics
  • Pre-Engineering: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or Further Mathematics
  • Business/Economics: Economics, Mathematics, Business Studies or Accounting
  • Social Sciences/Law: History, Sociology, Psychology, English Literature
Choose A Level subjects based on the university course you are targeting, not based on what you did well in at O Level.

Cost of O and A Levels in Pakistan

Cambridge examination fees are set in British pounds and converted. As of 2024–25, expect approximately:

  • O Level: PKR 18,000–25,000 per subject (examination fee alone)
  • A Level: PKR 22,000–30,000 per subject per year

These are in addition to school tuition fees. Budget carefully. A student taking 8 O Level subjects in a single session can pay PKR 180,000–200,000 in exam fees alone.

Pakistani University Recognition

All major Pakistani universities, including LUMS, NUST, IBA, Aga Khan, and FAST, accept A Levels. Some have equivalency conversion: a common formula is that 3 A Level passes equal FSc, and specific subject requirements apply per degree programme.

International University Recognition

A Levels are internationally recognised and are the standard qualification for UK university admissions via UCAS. They are also accepted by universities in Canada, Australia, Singapore, and the UAE. For US universities, A Levels are accepted but you may still need SAT/ACT scores.
